Activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) in blood samples collected from 20 3- to 6-day-old Polish Lowland Black-and-White calves and their 13 dams aged 5-7 years was 23.8 and 17.7 IU/g haemoglobin respectively. The GPX activity was higher in femalethan in male calves (28.2 and 19.3 IU/g haemoglobin, respectively). Feed analysis revealed low concentration of Se (0.03 mg/kg dry matter as compared with the recommended minimum level of 1.0 mg/kg) and other microelements (Cu 4.94, Zn 35.1, Mo 0.24 mg/kg and S 0.34 g/kg dry matter respectively). It is suggested that lower levels of GPX activity in cows resulted from the increased loss of Se with milk in early lactation. It is also concluded that hay prepared from pastures in the Narew river valley islow in essential minerals.
