Due to the growing concern for environment protection, radioactive waste management has emerged as one of the most challenging areas of present day research. Sr (T_(1/2) = 28.5years) is one of the important fission products present in high level waste (HLW) solution generated during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. The separation of long-lived ~(90)Sr from HLW helps in reducing the volume of disposable waste: Removal of ~(90)Sr makes surveillance easier as the deformation of matrix due to heat generated is minimized. Membrane based separation methods for Sr removal from nuclear waste solution are of recent origin. The present report deals with a membrane separation method based on the Sr -selective property of crown ether (Fig. 1) and better stability of the polymer inclusion membrane (PIM).
