Review of issue: the impact of time of day, mood, and caregiver stress on function in patients with dementia.

In Cognitive Status Changes Based On Time Of Day In Nursing Home Patients With and Without Dementia the effects of time-of-day on administration of Mini-Mental State Examinations in nursing home patients with dementia or functional psychiatric disorders. Within the dementia group, men and women performed equally in the morning, but women performed worse in the afternoon on total Mini-Mental State Examinations scores, orientation and immediate recall. Within the functional psychiatric group, no gender or time effects were detected. The authors conclude that female patients with dementia performed worse in the afternoon, particularly in areas of orientation and immediate recall. This has implications for activity planning for female patients with dementia.
