The Grid paradigm for accessing het-erogeneous distributed resources proved to beextremely effective, as many organizations arerelying on Grid middlewares for their computa-tional needs. Many different middlewares exist,the result being a proliferation of self-contained,non interoperable "Grid islands". This means thatdifferent Grids, based on different middlewares,cannot share resources, e.g. jobs submitted onone Grid cannot be forwarded for execution onanother one. To address this problem, standardinterfaces are being proposed for some of theimportant functionalities provided by most Grids,namely job submission and management, autho-rization and authentication, resource modeling,and others. In this paper we review some recentstandards which address interoperability for threetypes of services: the BES/JSDL specifications forjob submission and management, the SAML nota-tion for authorization and authentication, and theGLUE specification for resource modeling. Wedescribe how standards-enhanced Grid compo-nents can be used to create interoperable buildingblocks for a Grid architecture. Furthermore, wedescribe how existing components from the gLitemiddleware have been re-engineered to supportBES/JSDL, GLUE and SAML. From this experi-ence we draw some conclusions on the strengthsand weaknesses of these specifications, and howthey can be improved.
