TAXONOMIC NOTES ON PUNTIUS CHOLA (HAMILTON, 1822)

Puntius chola, a fish species of the family cyprinidae was described by Hamilton (1822) from West Bengal, India.Due to unavailability of topotypic specimens, taxonomic confusion exists in its features. Its original description was also mainlybased on morphological features. Therefore, many different Puntius species collected from different parts of India and adjacentcountries are being mistaken as Puntius chola. To get clarity on its taxonomic features, P. chola was collected from its typelocality and analyzed. It is also compared with its congeners.
