North American Stainless recently installed a dollar 200 million expansion of its plant in Ghent, Ky. SMS Demag, Inc., Pittsburgh, was awarded the contract for the complete supply and commissioning of the meltshop and casting facility equipment for the production of 800,000 tons of stainless steel slabs annually. This paper highlights the features of the AC EAF, AOD converter, ladle treatment station and continuous caster that make this plant the most modern steelmaking and casting facility in North America for the production of austenitic and ferritic stainless steel grades.
