Dr. Sharon Denham receives project funding for diabetes prevention in Appalachian families.

Dr. Sharon Denham, a professor at Ohio University's School of Nursing, is the project director for a new project titled "Strengthening Communities to Prevent Diabetes in Rural Appalachia." The project funding from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the first project year is USDollars 499,944. The potential for this continuing 5-year grant could bring almost USDollars 2.5 million into the Appalachian region to combat the spread of type 2 diabetes, a rampant disease among families in much of the region. A number of personal and community risk factors appear to contribute to the increased diabetes in economically distressed Appalachian areas. Eleven counties in the states of Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia will be included.
