Emergency and Long-term Measures of Steel Deck Pavement Distresses at BRT Station

AbstractOrthotropic steel deck, due to its limited influence on traffic, has been more and more widely used in the construction of viaduct and long-span bridges. However, the durability of steel deck asphalt pavement is the key technical issue in the construction of bridges. Rutting, translation and swelling distresses were observed shortly after opening traffic at the bus rapid transit bus stops in Chengdu. In order to deal with these distresses, both the emergency repairing method and the long-term rehabilitation approach are proposed in this study. For the emergency method, a newly developed polymer material which had both high-temperature stability and low-temperature flexibility is applied to treat these distresses. This kind of material performed well without creating new distresses during a 2-year service period. For another long-term approach, an advanced modified asphalt binder and an improved cost-effective stone mastic asphalt mixture with both high-temperature stability and low-temperature flexibility are developed by conducting a series of orthogonal experiment. Findings of this study can be used as a reference for similar projects.
