MIX1D is a one-dimensional computer model created at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign by Prof. Brian Thomas. This model was designed to take a given set of casting parameters and chemical grade specifications, and use them to predict the length and position of intermixed steel produced during grade changes in the continuous casting process. The model was intended for use on-line to react to real-time casting conditions and predict transition slab lengths, and off-line to examine the best casting strategies for particular grade-change scenarios. While the off-line applications proved to be more easily accomplished, the on-line application is clearly the more useful.
