In June 2001, Dofasco completed the installation of a 4000-kW induction-type, single power source edge heater ahead of the finishing mill. The expected benefits of the edge heater are: an improvement in mechanical property variation; higher throughput; reheat furnace fuel savings; and further improved product surface quality. Edge heater use is targeted at approximately 50 percent of the current product mix. Construction began in Dec. 2000, with the final installation completed in June 2001. Equipment commissioning was completed in Dec. 2001. Scope of the construction work was quite extensive, including the modification of existing table roll sections and the addition of new edge heater sideguides, two separate bar turn-up detectors and a deionized water cooling system.
