Flying Hot Saw Revamp at Lone Star Steel, Texas

In June 2000, the Profile Rolling Mill group of Siemens Energy & Automation, Alpharetta, Ga., completed the commissioning of the second flying hot saw at the tube mill plant at Lone Star Steel, Lone Star, Texas.The revamp included changing the existing DC shear motor/drive to AC technology. The technology included the newest type of active front-end rectifiers in combination with IGBT inverters. This application may be the first flying hot saw using this AC technology worldwide.
