Transverse corner cracks on peritectic and HSLA grades were analyzed at Mittal Steel Lazaro Cardenas. Countermeasures taken at the caster mold and secondary cooling have led to significant improvements in transverse corner cracking. Mittal Steel, the world's largest steelmaker, has established a global network of major steelmaking facilities in 14 countries, with production in excess of 42 million tons in 2004. Mittal Steel Lazaro Cardenas (MSLC, formerly Ispat Mexicana) is Mexico's largest steel producer and one of the world's largest exporters of slabs. MSLC uses direct reduced iron (DRI) as its primary metallic charge for steelmaking. The steel is 100 percent continuously cast. The main production facilities include: (1) A 3.8-million-tons-per-year (mtpy) pelletizing plant. (2) A 2.7 mtpy HYL III DRI plant. (3) A 1.5 mtpy Midrex DRI plant. (4) Four 220-ton electric arc furnaces, with a maximum production capacity of 5.2 million tons of liquid steel per year. (5) Two 220-ton ladle furnaces. (6) A tank vacuum degassing unit. (7) An RH vacuum degasser with top lance. (8) Two slab casters (two strands each) with a combined production capacity of 4.0 million tons of shippable slabs per year.
