Scaling of Performance Indicators in a Defective Ground Structure Based Microstrip Slotted Rectangular Patch Antenna

The scaling of the performance indicators including the gain, reflection coefficient and bandwidth of a basic rectangular patch antenna upon the slotting of the patch geometry and the implementation of a defected ground structure is observed. The different design stages use a 50 mm x 45 mm Flame Retardant-4 Epoxy substrate that has a thickness of 1.6 mm and a relative permittivity of 4.4. Coaxial feeding has been used. Software used for simulation is HFSS-15. The proposed structure is developed through the iterations of a basic rectangular patch, multiple slotting of the patch and finally the implementation of defected ground structure. Almost all the design stages exhibit a fairly constant number of bands. The improvement of performance indicators of reflection coefficient and gain in each subsequent stage is however remarkable. The bandwidth performance is also seen to witness partial improvement. The two final design stages has been fabricated and experimentally verified. The measured results have been found to be in close approximation with the simulated ones.
