The image of Kenya as a deepwater upstream hopeful took a hit as Apache, one of only two operators to have drilled a well in the last six years, decided to hand back its block. The US independent is operator of Block L8 where the Mbawa well was drilled last year - it was an oil target but uncovered uncommercial gas reserves. Anadarko is the only other operator to have tested the deepwater in recent years, having drilled ihe unsuccessful Kubwa well and currently still operating the long-delayed Kiboko well in Block 11B.
