Controlling Filamentous Organisms in a Cokemaking Wastewater Treatment Plant

Through team participation between LTV Steel and Killam Associates, process modifications incorporating anoxic selector concepts in one of the aeration basins have made it possible to biologically remove and control filamentous organisms. The series-mode operation, coupled with anoxic shock technique, has proven successful in controlling filamentous organisms at the Warren Coke Plant WWTP, while maintaining adequate nitrification. However, these control measures using existing equipment are far from optimal and require very careful operator attention. Consideration is being given to modifying the system for simpler and more effective use of these concepts in the future. Such modifications may include the installation of an anoxic selector tank upstream of the aeration basins, and modifying chemical and air feed systems for better pH and dissolved oxygen control in each aeration basin.
