Conjunctivitis is also known as pink eye, is an inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva. Conjunctivitis may be due to allergies or due to bacterial (Staphylococcus or Streptococcus) or viral infection. Current study deals with the development of sustained release ophthalmic ointment containing CPF nanoparticles for the treatment of conjunctivitis. Sustained release nanoparticles were prepered by high speed homogenization method using PLGA polymer. The prepered nanoparticles were characterized for particle size analysis, encapsulation efficiency, PDI, zeta potential, SEM and drug release study. The optimized formulation of nanoparticle (F5) showed 82.9% of drug release over the period of 10 hours, encapsulation efficiency of 99.90%, Particle size 90.5 nm, PDI 0.2 and zeta potential 28 mV. The optimized formulation of nanoparticle was added to the ophthalmic ointment base. Optimized formulation of ophthalmic ointment (OP5) showed 75.9% of CPF release over the period of 10 hours. The ophthalmic ointment didn't showed eye as well as skin irritation. The complete curative effect on conjunctivitis was observed in case of formulation with CPF nanoparticles in rabbit model. This study confirms the efficacy of the ophthalmic ointment containing CPF nanoparticles in conjunctivitis.
