A study was conducted to compare the performance of three types of diets among themselves and to evaluate their efficiency in substituting brine shrimp partially or fully while using them alone (first two treatments) or in combination (last treatment) with brine shrimp for the seed production of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Hatchery produced larvae (Stage I) were stocked in fibre reinforced plastic tanks and plastic pool containers at stocking density of 100 numbers/litre. In treatment 1 (T-1), Tubifex worm and in treatment 2 (T-2), Lamellidens meat alone, were used as larval feed while in treatment 3 (T-3), prepared diet + Artemia nauplii (only one time as overnight feed) were used in combination. The post-larval yield of 22.66 numbers/litre was obtained in the prepared diet + Artemia nauplii, while it was 11.0 and 8.0 numbers/litre in T-1 and T-2 within 42, 45 and 45 days, respectively. It is concluded from the present study that Tubifex worm and Lamellidens meat alone cannot be a good substitutefor Artemia nauplii, whereas, prepared feed + Artemia nauplii (only one time over night feed) in combination can be used instead of using Artemia alone throughout the larval rearing cycle to reduce the cost of seed production.
