Biocontrol of shrimp bacterial pathogens using penaeid larva associated bacterium, Alteromonas sp.

In-vitro antagonistic activity of penaeid shrimp larva associated bacterium, Alteromonas sp against several opportunistic crustacean pathogens, Vibrio spp was studied, besides the in-vitro as well as in-vivo inhibition of shrimp larval pathogen, V.harveyi. In addition, resistance of these bacteria to 10 antibiotics was studied. More than 80% of Vibrio spp exhibited multiple antibiotic resistance. Alteromonas sp inhibited more than 98% of Vibrio spp in-vitro at varying levels, with luminous Vibriospp being the most sensitive group. A significant reduction in the growth of V. harveyi was recorded when grown alongwith Alteromonas sp in liquid medium but not in seawater. Alteromonas sp suppressed the activity of V. harveyi and improved the survivalof Penaeus indicus larvae in-vivo. A great potential exists for such antibacterial bacteria to control the microbial pathogens under aquaculture conditions.
