When reflecting on the role of laughter in the human experience, Eric Idle has been reported to say, 'I think laughter has the most important place in life because laughter is a survival mechanism that teaches us what is true and not true...' (Westwood 2007: 16). Sima Elizabeth Shefrin's recent work, the Embroidered Cancer Comic is both a deceptively gentle story and a powerful testament to the importance of laughter as a survival mechanism in the challenge of living with cancer and through treatment that follows a diagnosis.
