The development and cultural translation of a brief theatre-based programme for the promotion of bystander engagement and violence prevention

Art has a long history in the service of healing and the treatment of ill-health: the use of poster art to convey health information has had a history of over 50 years (Helfand 1990); multiple kinds of art therapy are used to respond to both physical and mental ill-health (Deane et al. 2000; Goodill 2005; Mazza 2003; Ridenour 1998); there is also the creation of healing environments within hospitals and other health service facilities (Lefjn and Levine 2011:1). Participation in arts-based activities is increasingly recognized as contributing to individual and social well-being (Barraket 2005; Johnson 2007; Williams 1995). Arts are also finding an increasing use within health research (Eraser and al Sayah 2011). Some of the intrinsic benefits of art on individual and community health are in providing a voice to those that have previously been ignored by society; critiquing culture with the purpose of promoting change; and bringing people together in order to reflect on how a community wants itself to be perceived (McCarthy et al. 2004). The use of arts-based methods for the promotion of health and well-being is also now beginning to burgeon (Eraser and al Sayah 2011).
