Ameliorating Nonhuman Animals' Lives: Erin McKennas Pets, People, and Pragmatism

摘要

This review article discusses Erin McKenna's pragmatist theory concerning the ethical treatment of companion animals, which she lays out in Pets, People and Pragmatism. McKenna develops a middle-ground view between the two opposite positions that frame the current debate on companion animals, focussing on the relationship between human and nonhuman animal beings. I suggest that the question of whether the domestication of nonhuman animals is not only a natural process, but also a desirable one, stillremains unclear.
