CONTEMPORARY AMERICANS ARE not as nomadic as our prehistoric ancestors were—we aren’t subject to the whims of the food chain, following herds of bison across the Great Plains. When we travel we take cross-country road trips and flights for the fun of it, or in search of higher-paying, more creatively rewarding jobs. The sophistication of our everyday technologies would astonish any hapless time traveler from as recently as 50 years ago, let alone 100. So why does it still feel like embarking on an adventure with prehistoric technologies when consumers contact their primary care physicians to have health records transferred to a doctor a few states over— or even just across town?
