ENVIRONMENT — The European Waste-to-Advanced Biofuels Association (WEABA) is urging the European Commission not to provide indiscriminate support to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) under its new ReFuelEU Aviation initiative (JFI Jul.20’20). WEABA President Michael Fiedler-Panajotopoulos, who is also European director of public affairs for North American biodiesel giant Renewable Energy Group (REG), sug- gested 3 million metric tons fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emis- sions would have been saved if all of Europe’s recycled cooking oil between 2017-19 had gone toward making HEFA-type SAF rather than road biodiesel.
