Dr Amen: When I went to medical school, I wanted to be a pediatrician. But learned I really didn't like holding children down to look in their ears and having them [become] afraid of me. I'd much rather be on the floor playing with them. And so I found child psychiatry was just perfect.Four months after I got married, when I was a sophomore in medical school, my wife tried to kill herself, and I brought her to the department of psychiatry. I fell in love with the doctor who helped her and just found that it fit my personality. So, I had a family member who was suffering with a mental illness, and I just loved listening to the stories of people's lives.
