Communications technologies are essential to the successful implementation of smart factories. Thomas Schoepf, director of research and development at Belden Industrial Connectivity, examines how these technologies are evolving and considers some of the choices that users need to make. The fourth industrial revolution - known commonly as Industry 4.0 - is taking hold quickly, with the promise of making manufacturing operations more responsive, efficient and flexible. Made possible by the connectivity innovation known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Industry 4.0 relies heavily on advanced automation, communication and processes that enable humans, machines and components to collaborate.
