STUCK IN THE EIGHTIES - MPG, THAT IS!

Hello Doc, apologies for the hiatus - I've been otherwise occupied. Notwithstanding your (understandable) scepticism, I think that 80mpg brim-to-brim is within the bounds of possibility, provided I can learn how to tame my car's appetite for DPF regeneration. As previously related, my last tankful and cumulative average was significantly dented by a last-minute regeneration. I was only 80 miles into my latest tankful when regeneration was initiated again, rapidly followed by three more episodes at similar intervals - four within 400 miles. Meanwhile, my cumulative average mpg has been up and down like a yo-yo, and at the moment it stands at 79.3mpg, from a low of 78mpg. I have now clocked up another 150 miles without further incident, but with about 100 miles still in the tank, I'd be surprised if I get to the point of refilling before the DPF demands another sluice of fuel to feed its hunger. I'll update you when I do fill up again. It's a bit dispiriting to drive along comfortably, with 90mpg showing as the journey average, only to see the figure plunge to about 45mpg within a moment or two, with a corresponding knock to the cumulative average, which seems to take an immediate hit when regeneration sets in, but then takes time to rebuild afterwards.
