Effect of different lights interception and varying concentrations of nitrogen fertilization on polyphenols in Nigella sativa

Nigella sativa is an important medicinal herb being used as condiments, pharmaceuticals and functional food ingredients. N. sativa imparts medicinal properties like anti-oxidant, antimicrobial and anti-spasmodic etc., due to presence of polyphenolic compounds. This study was planned to check the effect of varying concentration of Nitrogen fertilizers on the production of polyphenolic compounds i.e., total phenolics and total flavonoids in N. sativa in the presence of different lights interception i.e., direct sun light, using white net and green net in experimental station. Results revealed the decreasing trend in concentration of both, total phenolic acids and total flavonoids with increased nitrogen fertilization. However, different types of lights interception showed the significant effects on the level of decrease in polyphenols' concentration due to increased nitrogen fertilization. This is the first study exploring the effect of nitrogen fertilization combined with different lights interception on production of polyphenols in N. sativa.
