Guice Slawson's early years were shaped by the lessons of the Great Depression. Like many Americans, his family suffered terribly from the brutal conditions brought on by the Stock Market crash in 1929 and the subsequent collapse of the U.S. and worldeconomies."It was really rough on Daddy (Preston Slawson). They lost everything, their home, the land, their pride. Of course he was born in 1912 so he was a young teenager when it really hit them the hardest," Slawson noted. "Mama's family was hit just as hard. They were from Clay County and they wound up in our part of the country (rural Barbour County) simply because her dad was trying to find a job that would make a living for them. That's how my mother and father met down there in the country."
