摘要

In recent years, the incidence of misconduct has continued to in- crease. Roig [1] reported plagiarism misconduct investigations at 12% in 1989, with a huge increase to 66% in 2005. In the past, we relied on reviewers and readers for detection of potential misconduct. This was and is clearly a hit-or-miss process. That approach does not provide the necessary tools to maintain scientific integrity in the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) or any biomedical journal [2]. We use the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines to maintain publication ethics in the A JR. These guidelines address the roles of authors, reviewers, and editors (www. icmje.org). The roles of editors are clearly defined. As Editor in Chief, I am responsible for the entire content of the journal and for ensuring scientific accuracy and integrity [3]. Because of increasing misconduct issues, in 2012 we developed a new protocol for dealing with editor, reviewer, and author misconduct [4]. However, a more effective approach to detecting misconduct was required.
