Although B-mode ultrasound was in use by the 1960s, it was in the 1980s that clinical ultrasound gained common usage [4]. Once called the "stethoscope of the future" [5], ultrasound is fast becoming the "stethoscope of today," within reach of the provider at the point of care with handheld devices not larger than a cell telephone. Today, advanced image processing techniques with ever faster scanning times and improved resolution have stretched beyond ultrasound to open up the possibility of real-time MRI and CT.
