I have written previously about some of the disappointments experienced trying to grow a wide range of roses in our cold wet garden here in the west of Scotland. Treasured small-flowered china roses like 'Perle d'Or', 'Bloomfield Abundance' and 'Mme Jules Thibault' have not been sufficiently hardy to provide me with their button-hole flowers, even when grown in a cold greenhouse. Almost all the modern old fashioned varieties planted for continuity of flower become noticeably weaker after a couple ofwinters and eventually end up on the bonfire.
