On the day the final report of the Hackitt Review was published, news coverage was mainly indifferent to its complexities, focusing instead on the failure to ban combustible cladding. But this missed an opportunity to ask more important questions-and there are plenty. If you recognise the need to engage everyone in the industry, why does the report accuse stakeholders of "indifference", and go on to accuse them of gaming? Were the people working in cash-starved local councils, trying to get valuefor money for council tax payers, "indifferent"? Given a choice between two bids, and with the understanding that both are compliant, council employees would have been criticised for selecting a "gold-plated" solution.
