4065 : LE TADORNE CASARCA Tadorna ferruginea DANS LA VALLeE DE L'OUED RIGH (SAHARA ALGeRIEN)

The Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea in the Oued Righ valley (Algerian Sahara).During a study from August 2008 to July 20011 in the Oued Righ valley (northeastern Algerian Sahara) the Ruddy Shelduck showed to he a resident breeder there. The maximum number of birds recorded was of 892 individuals in October while the lowest numberseach year were recorded in June, July and August. The diurnal time budget showed that feeding was the main activity (50% ) followed by swimming (9.28%), walking (2.62%), flight (1.75%), sleeping (16.91%), preening (7.85%), courtship (4.38%), antagonism(4.03%) and resting (3.88%). The wetlands of this valley constitute a most favourable habitat for this species. Sabkhas and salt lakes were suitable breeding sites (more than 50 nests found and a total of 101-148 was estimated).
