Dr. Jeffrey David Rogozinski, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings, USA, explains how non-shielding coatings enable monitoring to enhance pipeline safety. The underground oil and gas pipeline industry must operate heavily on trust. It is one of very few industries that buries its primary assets underground, leaving direct visual inspection impractical. As such, pipeline owners and operators need to trust that the corrosion prevention systems applied to their pipes will endure over time to enable long-term, safe operation. However, pipelines transporting volatile contents are not out-of-sight, out-of-mind assets. They need to be monitored. Owners and operators must be able to verify that their corrosion prevention systems are continuing to work properly and do not require attention. The only way to do so is by specifying a corrosion prevention system that enables such monitoring - so owners and operators can still trust the system is performing up to standards, yet also verify its performance.
