CLAD PIPES IN THE Caspian SEA

Thomas Schuller, BUTTING, Germany, recalls how the company was commissioned to deliver replacement clad pipes for the development of the Kashagan oilfield in the Caspian Sea. Kashagan - named after a 19th century Kazakh poet - is a large offshore oilfield in the Caspian Sea; the largest lake in the world. It is around 80 km from the town of Atyrau in Kazakhstan, the ninth largest country in the world in terms of surface area and is one of the richest in natural resources. The Kashagan oilfield was discovered in 2000 and is considered the most significant find of the past three decades. It is the fifth largest oilfield in the world, with an area of 3375 km~2. Since 2001, an international consortium of seven oil companies - who have appointed North Caspian Operating Company N.V. as their operator - have developed the oilfield.
