The US solar industry now has the largest cache of utility-scale projects ever, driven by falling prices, friendly state and federal policies and corporate off-site procurement. That will cut into gas’share of the power generation market, particularly as several states advance renewable portfolio standards(RPS)aimed at replacing fossil fuels with renewables.About 11.2 gigawatts of new solar photovoltaic(PV)projects were announced in the first half of 2019,according to the latest US Solar Market Insight Report from the Washington-based Solar Energy Industries Association(SEIA)and Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables. These pushed the utility PV pipeline to a record 37.9 GW — the equivalent of 0.63 billion cubic feet per day(6.5 billion cubic meters per year)of gas-fired capacity.Residential solar capacity in the second quarter grew by 3% quarter on quarter and 8% year on year.
