As Iraq pushes on with reconstruction following a shattering three-year conflict with Islamic State, thedevelopment of gas gathering and processing infrastructure finally seems to be shaping up, with processedgas output continuing to increase. But thafs been a long time coming, and over half the gas produced inassociation with oil is still flared. Popular frustration with the slow pace of change, particularly shortagesof power and other basic services, triggered major unrest over the summer. Baghdad attempted to deal withthe problem in May by hoisting gas imports from Iran to around 500 million cubic feet per day, but wasunable to prevent rolling blackouts as temperatures soared, notably in the south, where most o f the country^estimated 132 trillion cubic feet (3.7 trillion cubic meters) of proven reserves lie.
