The first shipments from Yamal LNG have arrived in China, seven months after the plant opened in the Russian Arctic. Two spot cargoes were delivered last week via the Northern Sea Route to PetroChina’s Jiangsu Rudong tenninal in the east aboard the ice-class tankers Vladimir Rusanov and Eduard Toll. A third is expected next week on C’/mlvtoplie dc Maigerie. That represents a giant leap for the projects controlling shareholder, Novatek, which says it wants LNG from Yamal and ?iture Arctic plants to be the “most com- petitive" in China. lt also underlines Russia’s emergence as the world's third “swing supplier” alter Qatar and the US — sending cargoes either east or west — although volumes are currently too small to have much price impact (WGI Mar.2l ’ l 8).
