Brazil Looks Over-Ambitious on LNG-to-Power

Brazil is set to open two more LNG import terminals over the next two years,adding to the two alrea y in operation,as it looks to encourage gas-fired power generation.They are among 22 LNG import projects on the drawing board,most linked to power plants.According to the government's Energy Research Office(EPE),12 of the units alone could boost Brazilian LNG demand by about 54 million tons per year.But only four with a combined capacity of around 17 million tons/yr have applied for environmental licenses,and observers suspect that most won't go ahead.The two new projects are the Porto de Sergipe I LNG-to-power development in Barra dos Coqueiros in the northeast,about 1,100 miles(1,760 kilometers)north of the capital,Rio de Janeiro,and Porto de Acu in Rio de Janeiro state.Porto de Sergipe 1 has already started commissioning and will begin commercial operations in January 2020.The project includes a floating storage and regasification unit(FSRU)and a 1.5 gigawatt power plant.Golar LNG is supplying the FSRU,while LNG will be delivered under a 1.3 million ton/yr long-term contract with Ocean LNG,a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil.Porto de Acu,spearheaded by a joint venture of BP,Siemens and Prumo Logistica,will involve a 4.2 million ton/yr FSRU and 1.3 GW power plant.It is due to open in 2021.
