Indian Renewables-Gas Blend Could Lift LNG

India is considering blending cheap renewables with gas-fired power in a bid to ensure cleaner round-the-clock electricity. That could help gas find its perch in power generation and encourage more LNG imports into India, the world's fourth-largest buyer, which is widely expected to spur Asian demand going forward (WGI Oct.7'20). But Indian consumers are extremely price-sensitive and the challenge would be to source sufficiently cheap gas. "The landed price of gas in India is a little bit costlier than the renewable price," Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told the Energy Intelligence Forum last week. "But looking into the technical nature of solar generation, blending with gas is the best way. India is developing its own model for hybridizing solar and gas-based energy."
