VIETNAMESE PANGASIUS PRODUCERS are seeking to diversify, both in the products they produce from pangasius and in the range of products they sell."There is simply not enough profit in the panga [pangasius] business anymore to survive on it alone," says an industry insider. "And markets disappear like the Spanish did, overnight, [due to the television misinformation scandal], the second biggest inEurope."Even the biggest producers are struggling, the insider adds. "Nam Viet is a huge farmer and has stable markets in China so can survive as the company farms its own fish. Vinh Hoan likewise, but it tries to branch out with more value-added products, and even rice, to get better profits."
