Tensions over exploration rights in the eastern Mediterranean will escalate signifcantly if Turkey and Libya press ahead with joint drilling projects from 2020. The threat of EU sanctions has so far been inefective in curbing Turkish drilling activity in Cypriot waters. Turkey’s assertiveness in the eastern Mediterranean is likely to frustrate aspirations toward the development of the EastMed pipeline.
