Statistical Analysis of Ground Water Quality in the Coastal Region of Mangaluru, India

Pollution load from the major industries of Mangaluru are discharging into the ocean directly or indirectly through the west flowing Gurupura river of the area. Due to this, quality of the water is influenced and causing the Physicochemical characteristics to alter. This study was carried out to know the quality of the ground water in the study area. Nine ground water samples were collected from the open wells and analyzed for various parameters by adopting standard methods. The descriptive statistical analysis was carried out besides Pearson correlation. From the correlation analysis, it was observed that, very strong correlation was observed between TDS and EC (1.000), Chlorides and E C (0.950), Chlorides and TDS (0.949) during pre monsoon and TDSand EC (1.000), Hardness and EC (0.94332), Hardness and TDS (0.943) in the period of post monsoon season. The values of Turbidity, TDS, and Total alkalinity in most of the samples were found below the drinking water standards. High values of BOD, COD, and Hardness were observed in most of the water samples.
