ALTHOUGH SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTED by the ownership of a Mk 7 Golf R, what it had taught me was that, for a weekend car, I needed something a little more exciting. Technical excellence doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with thrills and the R's unyielding capability that had made it the leader of many group tests seemed to be at the expense of any degree of frisson, particularly when driven at sane speeds and, as a result, it failed to make an emotional bond with me.
