Propiscin as a new anaesthetic for fish: its effects on heart activity and some haematological aspects of carp, Cyprinus carpio

The effect of anaesthetization with propiscin upon carp, Cyprinus carpio have been investigated with reference to the heart activity and some haematological aspects. Fish exposed to propiscin resulted in decreasing of the heart rate and disturbances in the bioelectrical activity of the cardiac muscle. On the other hand, anaesthetization with propiscin dearly influenced all blood values of carp. Red blood cell counts, hemoglobin content, hematocrit value and plasma glucose levels increased significantly during anaesthesia and the peak values were measured after 2hr. of recovery. Several distinct trends were encountered among the major ions measured. Plasma sodium and chloride, for example, were in excess of the control levels. In contrast, potassium ions tended to be somewhat below than those of the control. Calcium ions appeared to be conservative. Handling (anaesthetic- free water) seemed to influence blood values in the manner identical to anaesthesia (P > 0.05). This mean that, changes observed in these experiments can be mainly due to handling process rather than propiscin. Also, it has been confirmed that recovery may require anywhere from a few minutes to several hours depending upon the specific parameters considered.
