The characterization of infectious bursal disease virus strains/isolates from field outbreaks in India.

Of 5 infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) isolates, IBDV S194, S294, S394, S494 and S593, collected in 1993 and 1994 in the Indian states of Maharashtra, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, 3 showed cytopathogenic effects when cultured in chick embryo fibroblast cells. These isolates were identified as IBDV by virus neutralization tests using a standard hyperimmune serum against infectious bursal disease and by their physico-chemical properties and pathogenicity in chick embryos and chicks. The IBDV S394strain was antigenically different from the IBDV S194 and IBDV S494 strains and from the IBDV Intermediate Georgia strain (Indovax), one of the vaccine strains used in India. It is therefore suggested that there are at least 3 strains, IBDV GS, S394 andS194/S494 within IBDV serotype 1.
