This article covered a refinery scientist who suggests that tar sands crude isn't corrosive outside of the high temperature of refineries. Pipeline failure statistics tell a different story. Without proper management, even light conventional crude oil at ambient temperature can and does corrode pipelines. The U.S. pipeline system, which still primarily transports the lighter crude oils that it was designed for, has had 74 pipeline failures due to internal corrosion since 2010.
