While the coal and ore mining in Hungary can look back at a several hundred years old tradition, mining of bauxite and some other minerals, just like production of mineral oil and natural gas started in the beginning of the 20~(th) century. In the report particularly the effects of the political and economic changes on the Hungarian mining industry in the last decade of the 20~(th) century are described. Current questions concern the legal bases for mining of minerals in Hungary, mining and environment, particularly environmental protection, but also changes by the joining to the European community.
