Transport planning and traffic safety: making cities, roads, and vehicles safer

Road safety is critical in making cities inclusive, resilient, safe, and sustainable and thus promoting well-being and ensuring healthy lives. The importance of Road Safety can be understood from the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared 2011-2021 as the Decade of Safety Action. The book editors have tried to bring different thought processes and ideas from experienced intellectuals spread across the globe under one roof and it is worth mentioning that it covers most (if not all) of the dimensions and basic tools related to Traffic Safety Studies (TSS). The vast knowledge, experience, and expertise of 15 different authors clearly reflect in the text, which is compiled in a comprehensive and well-written form by the editors. The book consists of 23 chapters, each authored by an expert in the respective domain. The first chapter throws light on the trends in the safety performance of OECD countries. Next chapter attempts to answer the question - Why the term "accident" should be replaced with "Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs)"? Building the conceptual foundation of the reader further, chapter 3 describes the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) project and compares road transportation impacts (fatalities and injuries) with other diseases.
