Track renewals represents a substantial sub sector of the rail industry, worth around {EUR}800M a year to a supply chain employing about 10,000 people whose overall task is never ending. "We will never run out of work to do. The track will always wear out," says Network Rail's programme director Steve Featherstone. The workload covers all of England, Scotland and Wales and is comprised of conventional and high output plain line renewals, plus switch and crossings work in the north and south.
